Applications of Pattern Recognition To Protein Classification

Prof.  Angel Kuri-Morales

Abstract: One of the as yet to be solved problems in molecular biology is the classification of proteins. As of to date the typical approach has been to establish an a priori set of criteria to attempt such classification and then try to justify these criteria by trying to adjust a (mathematical) model to the observed data. There are several data bases and data repositories which have been established under this light. A new approach (which we advance) is to abandon subjective (biased) criteria and attempt to find patterns embedded in proteins expressed as chains of aminoacids and to reason backwards: try to find patterns which are shared by sets of proteins, cluster these proteins as per the shared patterns and then attempt classification accordingly.  In this approach we benefit from previous works where arbitrary patterns are found by applying both evolutionary computation and neural networks with the aim of achieving data compression. It turns out that for our algorithms it does not make any difference whether the strings of symbols are texts, images or (as in this case) aminoacid sequences. We will explore the basics underlying the aforementioned compression algorithms and show how they may be directly applied to unbiased protein classification.

Transport of non-equilibrium charge carriers in semiconductor structure

Prof. Yuri G. Gurevich

Physics Department of the “Centro de Investigacion Avanzada”,

National Polytechnic Institute, Mexico.

Abstract: The new model of generation and recombination processes of charge carriers in semiconductor structures is suggested.  It is shown that the traditional conception of lifetimes of non-equilibrium electrons and holes contradicts to Maxwell's equations.  There are investigated surface non-equilibrium processes of electron and hole transport at interfaces of structures and there are formulated the boundary conditions. The above stated questions are of great importance to design solid state electronic devices and solar cells.

Computational Biophysics Approach to
Understanding Regulation of Genetic Processes

 Prof. Valeri I. Poltev
Mathematics and Physics Department
Puebla Autonomous University, Mexico.

Abstract: From physics viewpoint, life can be considered as very complicated and highly ordered sequence of molecular transformations.  These transformations are governed by “genetic material”, i.e. by DNA macromolecules consisting all the information necessary for functioning any living thing.  Understanding physics principles of genetic processes is a fundamental task of molecular biophysics and a science in a whole.  Due to extreme complexity of molecules involved in life processes, molecular mechanics is the only way for constructing atomic level models of biomolecule structures and transformations.  Molecular mechanics considers biomolecular complexes as systems of classical physics using rather simple algebra formulae with semi-empirically adjusted coefficients.  A short survey will be given of modern state of molecular mechanics and its applications to modeling DNA structure and interactions.  A special emphasis will be made on interactions of DNA with biologically active compounds in relation to regulation of genetic processes.  The DNA interactions with caffeine as the most widely consumed such compound, and with actinocyn derivatives as potential anticancer drugs will be discussed.
