PLENARY LECTURE 1

Best approximation of function classes on the real line and spline interpolation

Professor Gennadi Vainikko

Institute of Applied Mathematics

Tartu University

J. Liivi 2, 50409 Tartu

E-mail: gen@ut.ee

Abstract: Given the values of function f on a uniform grid of a step size h on the real line, we construct the spline interpolant of order m, defect 1 using the B-spline basis obtained by wavelet-type dilation and shifts from the father B-spline (which can be treated as a scaling function for a special nonorthogonal wavelet system). We establish an unimprovable error estimate of the interpolants for the class of functions with bounded mth derivative. We show that in the sense of worst case, all other approximations to f using the same information about f are more coarse than the spline interpolant. Some further error estimates are established, in particular, error estimates for a quasi-interpolant to  a function given on a bounded interval.

Quasi Being of Neurons and Fuzzy Logic of Brain

Professor Lev Tsitolovsky

Abstract: Brain is the same complex, puzzle and attractive object in the universe. It generates goals, does not need in the external programming and has many unique properties. Elemental learning, memory and goal-directed behavior are not an emergent property arising from a whole brain, but are the attribute of a neural cell, as a unit. In special circumstances, a single neuron may play a key role in the behavior of an entire animal. After learning, a neuron evaluates the significance of the signal, transiently changes their own excitability and only later compares the magnitude of this signal and threshold. The primary feature of the brain is capability to perceive and to produce an agency. We suggest that excitation and inhibition are perceived by a neuron as negative and positive states. Intentional actions may be a consequence of the endogenous compensation of a drop in excitability after damage induced by a motivational excitation. Homeostasis regulates the number of physiological parameters, but it can support any factor at the value that differs on the predetermined standard due to the compensatory changes of other parameters. So, we believe that fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic approach is sufficient not only for adequate description of a neuronal behavior, but for actual mechanism of a neuron's self-controlling as well. We consider exertion in neuronal metabolism as a driving force, which induces actions directed against actual or anticipated damage. Resulting goal-directed behavior is rather appropriate for description of aware decision-making and fuzzy logic.

Control of Dynamical Systems in Models for Cancer Treatments

Professor Urszula Ledzewicz

Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Southern Illinois University

 Edwardsville, USA

E-mail: uledzew@siue.edu

Abstract: In this talk I will discuss the analysis of dynamical systems arising in biomedicine that describe various treatments of cancer. Mathematical models for cancer treatments have a long history, but with the development of medicine new challenges in modeling and the analysis of these models are appearing. Here cancer dynamics and treatment approaches will be discussed in the framework of optimal control theory. A general overview with examples of cell-cycle specific models will be given, some including multiple drug therapies, and challenges in modeling cancer treatments will be addressed. One of them, the important obstacle of evolving drug resistance in cancer chemotherapy, will be covered in more detail and its effect on the modeling of dynamics will be discussed. As an answer to this problem a new development in cancer treatment, anti-angiogenesis, will be presented. The importance of this novel treatment is that by targeting the cells of the vascularization of the tumor rather then the tumor itself, these methods are “resistant to drug resistance”. In the talk a mathematical model for cancer treatments with angiogenic inhibitors will be analyzed and a full synthesis of optimal controls will be constructed.
