Abstract: This presentation focusses a selection of nanotechnological topics in photonics on the field of research and application. In nanotechnology geometric variations of surface or interface structures enables to modify the physical material properties considerably and to tailor new “artificial” properties. First, these basic principles will be highlighted in photonics on (i) metallic nano-clusters of different size and on (ii) quantum structures for advanced laser devices. The presentation of these basic principles will be continued by photonic crystals of different dimensionality (1D, 2D, 3D), which often play a major role in this context. This is highlighted in the presentation including also examples from biology or nature. This leads to the interesting field of bionics, relating biology and technical areas. Bionics transfers the principles of success of nature into natural science, engineering disciplines and applications. Often generation and detection of different spectral colors play key roles in communication in both, nature and technology. The latter one refers e.g. to dense wavelength division multiplex optical communication systems. This paper shows interesting parallels in tunable spectral light filtering by butterfly wings and by tunable optical filters used in optical communication systems. In both cases light interferes constructively and destructively with nano- and microstructures of appropriate shape, dimensions and materials. In this paper methodology is strongly emphasized. Another very important topic of this talk will be tailored scaling, which tries answer the question of optimum size of systems. We demonstrate that tailored scaling allows the effectiveness of physical effects to be enhanced in nature and technology. Finally the potential of tailored scaling in micromachining to improve the photonic device properties, to enhance stability and yield is presented. As an example for the transfer of the principles of success of nature into technological applications we will look more detailed into micromachined spectrally tunable optical filters and lasers for information technology, sensorics and analytics are presented. These structures show amazing parallels to nature. Finally high reflective Bragg-Mirrors are fabricated for extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) are presented. These structures are very important for the next generation integrated circuit chip production.
