Abstract: Ultra Wideband or UWB is a technique based on transmitting very-short-duration pulses, often of duration of only nanoseconds or less. This allows it to deliver data rates in excess of 100 Mbit/s, while using a small amount of power and operating in the same bands as existing communication systems without producing significant interference.

UWB technology offers great opportunities for short-range wireless multimedia communications and networking. Unlike conventional wireless systems, which use narrowband modulated carrier waves to transmit information, Ultra-Wideband transmits over a wide band of radio spectrum, using a series of very narrow and low-power pulses. The combination of broader spectrum, lower power and pulsed data means that Ultra-Wideband causes significantly less interference than conventional narrowband radio solutions while safely coexisting with other wireless technologies in the market.

The distinct advantages of UWB communication that make it a strong candidate for future communication systems (both military and civilian) are: exceptional multi-path immunity, potential for substantially less power consumption than conventional systems, inherently secure, highly resistant to interference and exceptionally high spatial capacity.

The talk will start with the basics of UWB and go on to discuss the current state of the art in UWB communications.  The talk will also cover transceiver design issues for UWB systems.  The presentation will end with some future directions related to the research, development and killer applications for UWB systems.

Abstract: Finding the shortest path between two positions or between all pairs of points is a fundamental problem in transportation, routing, robot motion planning, and communications applications.

The second application area, investigated here, is focused on problems of finding minimal networks connecting a set of given points in the plane using either only straight connections between pairs of points (minimum spanning tree) or allowing the addition of auxiliary points to the set to obtain shorter spanning networks (minimum Steiner tree).

The purpose of this presentation is also to introduce special geometric structures of computational geometry – Voronoi diagram and Delaunay triangulation, and show typical examples of their efficient applications, e.g. in finding the Euclidean minimum spanning tree, Euclidean minimum Steiner tree and collision-free motions in robotics.

Finally, we deal with the All-Pairs Shortest Paths Problem and Steiner tree problem on a graph in which a fuzzy number, instead of a real number, is assigned to each edge. We propose a modification of the shortest paths approximation based on the fuzzy shortest paths (FSP) evaluations. Since a fuzzy min operation using the extension principle leads to nondominated solutions, we propose another approach to solving the FSP using Cheng's centroid point fuzzy ranking method.
