PLENARY LECTURE 1

Electricity, the human brain and information technologies

From the voltaic pile to neural networks

Professor Francesco Muzi

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

University of L’Aquila, Italy

Abstract: The latter half of the 18th century, Galvani’s famous experiment and Volta’s subsequent insight, marked the beginning of two branches of science that were to change the human life radically. Later on, the two new branches, namely electrology in physics and electrophysiology in medicine, although started together, followed different paths. On the one hand electrical engineering, electronics, and information technologies developed whereas on the other hand evolved electrophysiology, electrical and electronic diagnostics, and digital medical engineering. As a matter of fact, in the past but also in recent years there have been remarkable advancements in electrophysiology. The changes in the electric potential due to biological activity are acquired outside the body and can identify any normal or abnormal behavior of organs such as the heart (electrocardiogram), the muscles (electromiogram), the brain (electroencephalogram), the eyes (electroretinagram). The present trend seems to be pointing towards a sort of reunification of the two original branches, which will probably return to walk together, as the recent developments in bionics and in neural networks strongly suggest. Nowadays the investigation of these fields has just started, but even so a number of analogies have been discovered between the operation of an information processing system and the behavior of the human nervous system. As a direct example, in both cases the exchange of information takes place by means of a binary code, as can be seen in the electrical behavior of a single cell. Nevertheless, in certain cases an external electrical current passing through the human body can deeply alter vital functions, and have devastating if not lethal effects. The different issues are discussed through a unifying theory, which takes together both the electrical and biological aspects, highlighting the specularity of the two phenomena.

PLENARY LECTURE 2

Analytical modelling and investigation of the adjustable speed drive

performance under input voltage unbalance

Professor Jiri Klima

Dean of the Technical Faculty of CZU in Prague

Czech Republic

E-mail: [email protected]

Abstract: Adjustable speed drives are widely used in industrial applications as the most efficient means of achieving motion control.Input voltage unbalance and sag conditions can have serious consiquences on performance of induction motor drive.

One of the most harmful performance effect is torque pulsation (ripple torque) that are dominated by the second harmonic of the input line frequency (50 or 60 Hz). The paper presents the mathematical model enabling the closed-form solution of the motor currents and electromagnetic torque under this unbalance input voltage. The model is based on the mixed p-z approach. The analytical results can be used as a valuable design tool evaluating the impact of input voltage unbalance.

PLENARY LECTURE 3

Wind Power and the Impact on Power Systems

Professor Terje Gjengedal

NTNU & Statkraft

P.O.Box 200, Lilleaker, 0216 Oslo, Norway

E-mail: [email protected]

Abstract: Wind Power is among the fastest growing energy source in the world. In most systems, the amount of wind power integrated into large scale electrical power systems only covers a small part of total power systems load. With a low wind power penetration, system impacts are normally small and wind turbines normally do not take part in voltage and frequency control and if a disturbance occurs, the wind turbines are normally disconnected and reconnected when normal operation has resumed. That is, frequency and voltage are maintained by controlling the large power plants as would be the case without wind turbines present.

In systems with a large portion of wind power the wind turbines and wind  electric system may begin to influence overall power system behaviour, making it difficult to operate by only controlling large scale power plants. Therefore, when considering establishment of large wind power plants, several questions must be clarified. This includes transmission capacity, frequency and voltage stability, frequency control and reserves, and in some cases also flicker and harmonics. Detailed system and design studies must be carried out in order to find the best technical-economical solution for dealing with these issues. Large scale wind power may also bring substantial operational effects due to balance management and reserve impacts.

Therefore, grid codes are now developed that defines the dynamic and static requirements wind turbines must meet in order to be connected to the grid. These requirements may in some cases  be troublesome and difficult to fulfil. Examples on such requirements are capabilities of contributing to frequency and voltage control by continuous modulation of active power and reactive power supplied to the transmission system.

The speech will discuss these issues with the main focus on system operation, control and stability and it will be related to the abovementioned issues of system integration, power system impacts and future grid code requirements. It will provide a structured presentation of the principles, status and experiences of wind power in power systems. Examples and experiences will be discussed and presented.
